Weigh the mental, social, and bodily indicators of readiness, and state what each one contributes to the judgment.

Surface every concurrent condition, physical or psychiatric, that belongs in a clinician's hands before this program proceeds.

Determine the client's eligibility for the program, and exclude the client where safe participation cannot be arranged.

Operate within the statutory, regulatory, and program constraints that apply to psychedelic substances where the practice sits.

Complete the documentation that establishes program eligibility and appropriateness.

Secure the client's written consent covering their confidentiality and their rights before any information moves in or out.

Obtain the client's signature on waivers and on the program completion agreement.

Set out what this program is trying to accomplish for the person in front of you, and what it aims at in their care.

State the rules the client will be held to, what they owe the program, and what the program owes them.

Walk the client through how the program actually runs.

Choose the instruments that fit this client and the decision they are being used to make.

Establish how collateral history will be gathered and from whom, and hold a signed release before a word of it is sought.

Take the client's history with the instruments you selected.

Tell the client why each instrument is being used, so that nothing on the page is a mystery to the person answering it.

Draw the assessments together into one formulation of this person, their strengths, their limits, and what they specifically need, and make it strong enough to carry the integration plan.

Develop a plan for physical preparation, addressing diet, exercise, and sleep, to bring the client into the experience in sound physical condition.

Develop a plan for mental preparation, including mindfulness, visualization, and relaxation practices, giving the client a means of working with anxiety and fear before and during the experience.

Instruct the client in holding a personally established intention through the experience, and in returning to it when the experience moves away from it.

Give the client back what the assessments found, in language they can act on.

Name the client's concerns and put them in order of priority on the written plan.

Write goals into the plan that the client has agreed to, some near and some distant, each stated as a behavior an observer could see.

Choose the integration practices and the supports this particular client will actually use.

Construct the ceremonial space, accounting for safety, set, and setting, and for the symbols, objects, and ritual elements that carry meaning for the participants.

Conduct the ritual practices and invocations that establish the container.

Instruct participants in the guiding principles of the container: respect, surrender, trust, open-mindedness, and a commitment to self-exploration and healing.

Maintain ceremonial attending behavior across the session, holding a compassionate and supportive presence and providing guidance and reassurance as the participant requires it.

Commit to a coaching or counseling model, and be able to say why it fits this person.

Work the model with the client, the group, or the family, opening up what they are facing and where it leads.

Work the model to bring the client's conduct, stance, and feeling into their own view, in the session or afterward as the setting permits.

Fit the work to the person's culture, their gender, and the life they actually live.

Hold the ethical boundary in every contact you have with the client.

Draw the answer out of the client, and let the decision stand as theirs.

Put the integration plan into motion with the client, and keep it moving.

Bring the services this client's care depends on into one working arrangement.

Tell the client why the program is knitting them into a community, and help them see that community is medicine.

See a crisis for what it is made of while it is happening.

Respond to the crisis, coordinate assistance, and document the continuing care.

Support recovery after a crisis and review what the client and program need to address.

Explain the proposed service, its evidence, risks, practical arrangements, and available choices.

Help the client find, evaluate, and use relevant services and resources.

Explain the verified legal basis and limits of the service in the jurisdictions involved.

Identify unmet needs, obtain the required assessment, and document the service decision.

Explain the referral, its effect on current services, and the next steps.

Select and verify a resource that can meet the identified need within a workable timeframe.

Protect client information throughout collection, use, sharing, and retention.

Coordinate the agreed assistance, confirm the referral status, and assign continuing responsibilities.

Prepare complete and usable reports and records across the course of care.

Record services, observations, communications, results, and follow up as care continues.

Review and reconcile relevant information, then document the decisions and actions it supports.

Maintain the organization’s reports and records and support the client’s own record keeping.
